Crown raising:

A process of crown raising involves the removal of lower branches to lift the height of the crown from the ground. This may be carried out to allow access below the tree, improve light or improve the overall aesthetics of the lower canopy. 

Crown thinning:

Crown thinning involves removing a number of secondary branches within the canopy which out changing the trees overall shape or size. Secondary branches may consist of crossing, central growing, fractured or dead branches. Crown thinning increases light and thus decreases shade. Thinning also reduces the ‘wind sail’ on limbs; allowing wind to pass through the canopy without increasing load forces on limbs. 

Crown Reducing:

A process of pruning back tips of branches to a growth point further down the branch. When carried out over the whole tree the overall crown size is reduced. A maximum recommended reduction is normally 25% to avoid stress to the tree. Reducing the tree is a good way of controlling a tree’s size.

Formative Pruning: 

Is the process of selective pruning on young trees to create a stronger structure for future growth. This involves removing co-dominate stems, weak and competing branches whiles the trees young so it’s easier to heel over. 

Pollarding:

Is a traditional way of tree maintenance which

origins come from boundary land marks and delivering a multi stem crop for firewood and charcoal production. Pollarded trees have to be trained into pollarding at a young age to prevent stress on a tree. A current technique of pollarding is helping combat Ash Dieback (Chalara) with creating a safe structure. 

Tree felling:

As it suggests felling trees is a process of falling a tree in a safe and controlled manner. Felling calls for an array of different techniques depending on tree species and environments.
